15 Things to Do in Artesia, NM

Bronze vaquero and longhorn sculpture on Main Street in downtown Artesia, NM, with western wear storefronts behind

Artesia sits right in the heart of southeastern New Mexico, about halfway between Roswell and Carlsbad on US-285. Ask someone who's only driven through and they'll mention the refinery. Ask someone who lives here and you'll get a very different list — bronze statues and murals downtown, Friday nights at the Bulldog Bowl, festivals that take over Main Street, and yes, glow bowling and scratch-made pizza on Tumbleweed Road.

We run Artesia Lanes, so we'll admit some bias on #1. But the rest of this list is the guide we give our own out-of-town friends and family. Here's how to spend a day (or a weekend) in Artesia.

1.Bowl a few games at Artesia Lanes

Glow bowling night at Artesia Lanes — lanes lit in blue under the LED media wall with families bowling

We had to start here. Artesia Lanes is the town's bowling and entertainment center — modern lanes, a 10-foot LED media wall, an arcade, a pro shop, and a kitchen turning out scratch-made pizza. Come for open bowling, stay for glow bowling, or book a lane ahead of time if you're rolling in with a group. It's the rare Artesia activity that works equally well for a kids' birthday, a date night, or a Tuesday when it's 102° outside.

Good to know: You can reserve a lane online — handy on weekends.

2.Walk the downtown bronze statue trail

Downtown Artesia has one of the best public art collections of any small town in New Mexico — a series of larger-than-life bronze sculptures telling the town's story, from the vaquero and cattle-drive era to the oil boom. It's a free, self-guided walk along Main Street, and the statues are genuinely impressive up close.

3.Visit the Artesia Historical Museum and Art Center

Housed in a historic cobblestone building, the museum covers the region's ranching, farming, and oilfield history with rotating art exhibits alongside. It's free, it's air-conditioned, and it's the fastest way to understand why this town exists at all.

4.See "New Mexico's most beautiful library"

The Artesia Public Library is a destination in its own right, best known for its Peter Hurd mural — Hurd being one of New Mexico's most celebrated painters. Worth 20 minutes even if you're just passing through.

5.Catch a show at the Ocotillo Performing Arts Center

A renovated 1932 movie theater on Main Street that now hosts live music, theater, and community performances. Check their calendar — a show at the Ocotillo plus dinner downtown plus late bowling is about as good as an Artesia evening gets.

6.Walk or bike the Eagle Draw trail

A paved 3.2-mile path running through town — the local go-to for morning walks, evening runs, and getting the kids' energy out. Flat, easy, and pleasant in the cooler hours.

7.Spend an afternoon at Jaycee Park

Artesia's biggest park at 180+ acres: playgrounds, sports fields, picnic spots, and room to roam. Pair it with the Eagle Draw trail for a full outdoor morning.

8.Cool off at the Artesia Aquatic Center

Two tube slides, indoor pools, and an oil-derrick-themed splash pad (very Artesia). This is the summer move when the kids have had enough of the heat — and the arcade is the classic follow-up when they've had enough of the water.

Ready to make a night of it?

Lanes, arcade, scratch-made pizza — all under one roof on Tumbleweed Rd.

9.Experience Friday night at the Bulldog Bowl

High school football is a religion in Artesia, and the Bulldogs' stadium — the "World Famous Bulldog Bowl" — is one of the most storied venues in New Mexico. If you're here on a fall Friday, go. You'll understand the town better in three hours than in three years.

10.Hit the Red Dirt Black Gold Festival

Artesia's biggest weekend: a country music festival downtown with two days of live acts, food, and vendors (September 25–26 in 2026). Book lodging early — the whole corridor fills up.

11.Look up at Balloons & Tunes

Hot air balloons over the New Mexico desert at sunrise, live music after. It's the kind of small-town festival that photographs like a postcard.

12.Eat your way down Main Street

Downtown Artesia MainStreet has a solid lineup of local eateries and shops — and we'd humbly add that the scratch-made pizza at Artesia Lanes belongs on any Artesia food list. (Yes, a bowling alley said that. Come argue with us after you've tried it.)

13.Day trip: Carlsbad Caverns National Park

One of the most jaw-dropping national parks in America is about an hour south of Artesia. Descend 750 feet into the largest cave chamber in North America, then be back in Artesia for dinner and a few frames.

14.Day trip: Roswell's UFO scene

Forty-five minutes north gets you the International UFO Museum, alien-themed everything, and plenty of kitschy fun. Doing both? Read our guide to the Roswell-to-Carlsbad road trip — Artesia is the perfect halfway stop.

15.Join a league (the local's move)

The real answer to "what do people do in Artesia?" — they bowl in leagues. Fall sign-ups at Artesia Lanes are open to complete beginners, and league night is half sport, half social hour. If you've just moved to town, there's no faster way to meet people. League info here.
